The City of Columbia Mayor's Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities (MCEPD) is a committee made up of volunteers from various community programs, employers, and people with disabilities, all with an interest in better servicing and impacting change in our community in a positive way.
The goal of the MCEPD is to promote equitable access to employment opportunities for qualified persons having physical, mental, sensory, or cognitive disabilities. We strive to achieve our yearly goals in various ways in our community, such as:
- The Annual Employment, Education, and Resource Fair including information panels for consumers, and a presentation panel for employers.
- Two Lunch and Learn events to educate employers on the benefits of hiring people with disabilities. Speakers include employers who have experience employing people with disabilities.
- Annual Awards Luncheon that honors:
- Employers who have an exceptional record of hiring people with disabilities.
- Employees with disabilities who have exhibited outstanding job performances.
- Students with disabilities who have excelled in their class work and community involvement.
- In the past MCEPD has:
- Conducted accessibility surveys in the downtown Columbia area.
- Awarded scholarships for high school journalism essay contest winners.
The emphasis of the MCEPD is placed on encouraging mutually beneficial partnerships between employers and employees with disabilities. The Committee acts as a conduit of information for employers, consumers, and community programs relating to persons with disabilities.
