Proposed Business License Required for All Rental Property Public Hearing Scheduled for January 21, 2009
City Council Requests your attendance for the Proposed Business License Requirement for All Rental Property.

Public notice is hereby given that the Columbia City Council will consider adoption of and hold a public hearing on a proposed ordinance amending Chapter 11, Licenses, Permits and Miscellaneous Business Regulations, Article II, Business and Professional Licenses, Section 11-32 Definitions and Section 11-35, Registration of businesses; application for license, to require a property owner who leases or rents dwelling units or residential structures containing at least one sleeping unit, leased or rented to a non-owner for any term length, not to include rooming houses, boardinghouses, hotels, motels, dorms, medical or long term care facilities, bed and breakfast establishments, or rental units owned and administered by the Columbia Housing Authority to designate a responsible local agent to be responsible for all of the following: (1) operating the rental unit in compliance with all applicable city ordinances; (2) providing access to the rental unit for the purpose of making any and all inspections necessary to ensure compliance with the applicable city ordinances; and (3) accepting all legal notices or service of process with respect to the rental unit.
Homeless Shelter Open
Due to temperatures dropping below 40 degrees each night this week, the City of Columbia will open the Homeless Shelter (191 Williams Street) this evening and remain open for the duration of the cold weather season. The planned opening date for the shelter was November 1, 2008 but that date has been moved up to October 27, 2008.
