November 10, 2008 - Operation:Taking Back Our City
Operation: Taking Back Our City will encompass several of the City’s departments and each of them will work in unison together to improve the quality of life in the City of Columbia .


Homeless Shelter Open
Due to temperatures dropping below 40 degrees each night this week, the City of Columbia will open the Homeless Shelter (191 Williams Street) this evening and remain open for the duration of the cold weather season. The planned opening date for the shelter was November 1, 2008 but that date has been moved up to October 27, 2008.
Call for Nominations for the 2009 Martin Luther King, Jr. Dream Keeper Award
The Martin Luther King Memorial Foundation Committee is accepting nominations for the 2009 Dream Keeper's Award. Nominees must be 18 years or younger enrolled in school with a minimum 2.0 grade point average. Applications must include a written statement of 150 words or less along with documentation of a minimum of one year of community service.

Nominations must be returned to: The City of Columbia Department of Parks and Recreation, 1932 Calhoun Street, Columbia, SC 29203, Attention: Dream Keeper Award by 5 p.m. Friday, January 9, 2009.

Cash awards will be presented to three high school students:
1st Place: $1,000
2nd Place: $500
3rd Place: $250

One middle and elementary school student will receive $100 each.

Winners of the 2009 Dream Keepers Award will be announced at the annual Martin Luther King Day Celebration hosted by the City of Columbia, on Monday, January 19, 2009 at 4 p.m. at the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center, 2300 Green Street. The community is invited to attend.
