This Notice of Funding Available (NOFA) announces the availability of funding for the Program Year (PY) July 1, 2012 - June 30, 2013 for the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program. The CDBG Program is funded and regulated at the federal level by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and administered locally by the City of Columbia, under the auspices of the Community Development Department. The CDBG Program is authorized under Title I of the Housing and Community Development Act of 1974. The regulations implementing the CDBG Program are located in the 24 CFR, Part 570.

In honor of the American Heart Association’s 9th Annual National Wear Red Day, Friday, February 3, 2012, the City of Columbia invited elected officials, business leaders and neighborhood leaders to participate in a National Wear Red Day photo opportunity and press conference. The event was held at 1:00 p.m. in City Council Chambers located at 1737 Main Street, 3rd Floor.
Every 37 seconds someone dies from heart and blood vessel diseases. Heart disease and stroke account for 29.2% of all female deaths in South Carolina. On average, nearly 16 women die from heart disease and stroke in South Carolina each day.
“On behalf of the City of Columbia, I would like to thank the citizens who came out to support this initiative,” commented Councilwoman Tameika Isaac Devine. “With your dedication, we will combat this disease in our community.”
On Wednesday, February 29th from 12:00 - 2:00 p.m., the Charles R. Drew Wellness Center will partner with KISS 103.1FM to host a Wellness Wednesday for Women in honor of National Health month. This event will feature a Zumba fitness class from noon to 1:00 p.m., a heart healthy snack, heart health information, and screenings. KISS will broadcast live from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00p.m.

 2012 One Book, One Columbia Reading Period Has Begun!
The official reading period for the 2012 One Book, One Columbia program has begun! Reading advocates and citizens around the Midlands will be reading “Saints at the River” by Ron Rash
from Tuesday, January 17 to Wednesday, February 29, 2012. This past year's inaugural program,
which drew several thousand participating readers, was co-sponsored with the Richland County
Public Library and the Columbia Council of Neighborhoods and involved numerous community
groups and book clubs across the Midlands. This year the City of Columbia is proud to announce
that Richland County has joined this effort as a community partner.
|  Columbia Lifesavers Blood Drive
Mayor Steve Benjamin and the American Red Cross South Carolina Blood Services Region Board of Directors teamed up for the second annual Columbia Lifesavers blood drive 7 a.m.-6 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 2, at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center, 1101 Lincoln St.
This year’s event was a great success, with 317 pints of blood collected on a goal of 300. Last year’s inaugural drive resulted in 210 pints of blood collected on a goal of 200.
The Columbia Lifesavers blood drive was held to raise community awareness about the need for blood and to collect blood for hospital patients in need, including those undergoing cancer treatments, lifesaving surgeries, and emergency care related to accidents and trauma.
“We are extremely grateful for the support of Mayor Benjamin, City of Columbia managers and employees, and the South Carolina Region Board of Directors for helping the American Red Cross raise awareness in the Columbia community about the need for blood,” stated Delisa English, South Carolina Blood Services Region Chief Executive Officer. “The Columbia Lifesavers blood drive is a wonderful opportunity for us to work together to help hospital patients in need.”
All presenting donors received a Red Cross T-shirt and a pound of coffee courtesy of Starbucks. In addition, all presenting donors will be entered in a drawing for the chance to win two domestic roundtrip Delta Air Lines tickets through the Red Cross “Runway Getaway” promotion.
Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood. The American Red Cross South Carolina Blood Services Region provides lifesaving blood to patients in 54 hospitals. Approximately 500 people need to give blood or platelets each week day to meet hospital demand.
Blood can be safely donated every 56 days. Most healthy people age 17 and older, or 16 with parental consent, who weigh at least 110 pounds, are eligible to donate blood and platelets. Donors who are 18 and younger must also meet specific height and weight requirements.
|  SCE&G To Continue Tree Trimming Activities
SCE&G will continue to perform tree trimming activities along overhead utility lines in the Shandon, Sherwood Forest, South Kilbourne, Shiloh Community, Oakwood Court, Forest Hills, Forest Hills North, Melrose Heights, Lyon Street, Pinehurst, neighborhoods for the next two weeks. The trimming will be completed by SCE&G contractors and work will be closely monitored on a daily basis by the City’s 4 Certified Arborists from the Forestry and Beautification Division.
