About the Department
The Columbia Police Department has adopted the slogan: "THE POSITIVE DIFFERENCE". Those words don't apply only to the men and women of the department, but also to their number one ally, the citizens of South Carolina's Capital City.

The department has become a leader in the country in making the concept of community policing a reality. Community policing is addressing community concerns at the grassroots level. The plan for Community Policing was developed by the department in concert with broad based representation of community representatives from all segments of the city. As the department moves into the next century, it has set realistic goals and is continuing to develop partnerships throughout the community.

The Columbia Police Department has been accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). To learn more about this national accreditation program, click on the CALEA logo to visit their website.

In 1979, the Commission was created through the combined efforts of four major law enforcement organizations: the International Association of Chiefs of Police, National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives, National Sheriffs' Association, and Police Executive Research Forum. These organizations continue to serve in an advisory capacity to the Commission and are responsible for appointing members of the Commission.
