The City of Columbia is notifying citizens of a traffic lane shift on Farrow Road outbound and inbound from Columbia College Drive to E. Campanella Drive. Beginning Tuesday, June 19, 2018, outbound and inbound right lanes will be permanently closed to motorized vehicles. This vehicular lane reduction will provide for buffered bike lanes adjacent to the curb. At intersections with traffic lights, right turn lanes will be provided for motorized vehicles, which will result in an expansion to five lanes at these intersections. The City urges its citizens to adhere to the traffic signs and lane modifications.
The City is pleased to be partnering with the SC Department of Transportation (SCDOT) on the Farrow Road improvements to include buffered bike lanes as part of the project. Prior to proceeding with this concept, the City and SCDOT evaluated traffic count data and implemented a pilot project along this route to fully evaluate the impact of the changes.
The improvements being made incorporate components of the City of Columbia Pedestrian and Bicycle Master Plan, adopted in May 2015 after significant community engagement and input. The master plan recommended a number of catalyst projects to improve and enhance bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure and connectivity throughout the City. As such, the City of Columbia and SCDOT have collaborated to provide for the implementation of inbound and outbound buffered bike lanes along Farrow Road from Columbia College Drive to E. Campanella Drive as part of the overall project
